The “Makerspace” targets local students, including those from the small local university on the outskirts of the town. It also speaks to Onomichi’s strong interest in the arts. Operating as a hybrid workshop and community center, the facility enables students to visit for after-school programs, to make things, to study, and to socialize. Architecturally, the project aims to strengthen the links between the hillside and the seaside. Spatially, it recalls the Japanese concept of ma as a gap, a space in between two locations, to produce a new and yet familiar space for the community.
The courtyard connects the volumes around it and links the exterior to the interior
The project aims to invite new relationships among the existing and the new through juxtaposition
The roof of the project diminishes the volumetric reading of the built structure
The complex is made by rotating similarly shaped frames
