Collective Loneliness
Thinking of the boundary between solitude and community
Vanessa Wu
As living alone becomes more prevalent in large cities, so are places that accommodate the varying needs of solitary urbanites. But can architecture play an active role in fulfilling the desire for isolation while also helping to produce new forms of collectivity? This catalogue of annotated images represents varied conditions on a spectrum from autonomy to community. The visual narrative is presented as a website, along with ruminations on the relationship between the individual and the collective in urban space.
